After receiving an email from a fan regarding Rise Against’s use of the American Flag upside down during their set, the band responded with the letter below.

Thanks for your email and your concern. As a band and as artists, one of the things we strive to do is push the envelope in an attempt to get a reaction from audiences in hopes of creating a dialogue that transcends music and guitars and catchy chorus'. As per your email; mission accomplished.

Referring to the same link you included in reference to the flag, it says never display it with the union down, except as a signal of distress. Well, that is that exact signal and message we are trying to send. A signal of distress. Far from a symbol of disrespect, we are sending the message that our country is in trouble and we use guidelines laid out by the government to express it artistically.

Regardless of what issue resonates with an individual more, whether it's America's involvement in two controversial wars, a failing economy, Wall Street bailouts, same-sex marriage, a broken healthcare system, civil liberties, freedom of speech or privacy issues, or many more; Rise Against feels that America is in distress and we choose to express that feeling in a language that is recognized by the guidelines in the link you included in your email. As a freedom of speech and a freedom of expression, we are proud to have that outlet at a show like last nights show and would not tolerate any threat to the freedom. To invoke the term "anti-American" irresponsibly is something that is libelous and slanderous and something that offends us as humans and Americans.

I'm glad that you brought up the issue of sponsors as well. Just like the many sponsors of the show last night might not agree with us, we don't always agree with them. We've been put in uncomfortable positions in the past as sponsors peddle products we might not necessarily agree with. But we have faith that our audience is smart and can make up their minds for themselves, whether it's about beer or Rise Against. We respect the sponsors right to be there as long as they respect ours.

As a band we did endorse Obama, and we believe in holding his feet to the fire like any leader and will continue to do so through our songs and through artistic protest like our decision to fly the flags in a symbol of distress.

I hope this clears up your fear that we as a band would disrespect a country we believe in and fight for a better tomorrow. We work closely with both the USO and the Iraq Veterans Against The War and cherish the time we've spent with soldiers backstage. Later in our set we touched on this, but I assume you were absent.

umm, ya i agree with Rise against on this one, it is freedom of speech..so deal with it. My Father has been flying the flag upside down since the 1970s as a sign of distress due to the government labeling his father and his mother for something that was completely wrong..they went as far as painting their house red, white, and blue. They had built a 90ft flag pole in their yard in Winter Park Florida and flew a giant flag upside down for many years, but they did change it on 9-11 to show their respect..but it is still flown upside down to this day..so ya, you can just chill. haha.
  • Rights as an American
People! Hanging a flag upside down is an OFFICIAL symbol of a nation in distress. And I can't think of any way else to describe this nation. We're up to our throat in debt, we're fighting a war that is NEVER going to end, and congress isn't doing anything to help us.

RA and anyone else for that matter has the right to hang the flag upside down. RA RESPECTS the soldiers but is AGAINST the war, and I respect that. I am in the service myself, at the show, and was not offended. If you look at the band's background, Tim and the rest of the band support the USO and the soldiers. Listen to the lyrics, in fact, read them. You can clearly see that this band really respects any American who willingly and willfully gives theirselves to defend our great Nation.

Rock on RA. I believe in your cause.
  • Unhappy Still
As an American Service Member who has completed 3 tours in Iraq, I am still not happy with your decision to display the American flag upside down. The intent of flying the Flag upside-down was not for your protest, nor was it intended to say I am distressed at the way my country is running itself. The American Flag is not intended to be displayed as a decoration either. There are proper ways to display the American Flag in many different situations and Rise Against; you failed. I am happy that you chose to make a statement of your dis-pleasure with the state of our Government and the Policies being pushed and those that are in place. I ask as an American Serviceman that next time, please chose another form of protest. This is the same Flag that has been laid on the coffins of my fallen brothers.
  • Oh shit. I think some people just got TOLD.

This is what RA is about!!!

Meanwhile, Rise Against recently rolled out a video for its "Hero Of War," a track -- but not an official single -- from its latest album, "Appeal to Reason." Inspired by the 2006 documentary "The Ground Truth: After the Killing Ends," the song focuses on soldiers' Post Traumatic Stress Disorder after returning home from war.

"I think this is such an important song in our band's career," McIlrath says. "In a world that really tends to only listen to the singles and only skims (albums) this one hasn't seen enough of the light of day, but I just thought this is a story that needs to be told. So we're hoping that by doing a video it will bring some more attention, even if it's not an official single."
  • i dont see how anyone could think rise against was trying to be anti-american if you listen to their songs you would see they are all for america, there are just some problems within it, and them hanging the flag in the symbol of distress is a perfect symbol for it atm, but i could see how people got mad
  • RA's response
How anyone could think that Rise Against is anti American is beyond me. If you really listen to their lyrics, it's clear that they are FOR not only Americans, but humanity as a whole. They are not trying to create violence or hatred, they are trying to get this country's people to really examine the issues at hand and see things for what they really are. Everyone's entitled to their opinions and even if you don't agree, it is unecessary to accuse them of being anti American. They didn't burn a flag, they simply displayed it in a way that conveyed their ideals without using words. And no, eveyone did not leave when Risa Against took the stage. I don't know what ampitheatre you were at, but where I was sitting, there were a hell of a lot of people around, screaming their freakin' heads off and singing every single word in unison.
  • WHAT?!
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! I DONT CARE WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOUR MUSIC IS ABOUT, YOU NEVER HANG AN AMERICAN FLAG UPSIDE DOWN. NO WONDER WHY MOST OF THE PEOPLE AT THE SHOW EITHER WENT HOME OR STOOD IN LINE TO MEET 30 SECONDS TO MARS BEFORE RISE AGAINST CAME ON! 30STM WERE NOT THE MAIN HEADLINER BUT I KNOW WELL ENOUGH THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN! ITS FUNNY HOW THEY GOT MORE CREDIT THAN ANY OTHER BAND! PROVEHITO IN ALTUM!

First off I'd like to say that my Son currently serves in the military (just to give some context where my mind is at). He has been to both theaters of war and has signed up for another stint.

Two positive things happened from RA's display. First, someone was moved enough to act on something they did not like and write a note about it. We should all be inspired to do the same when something annoys us. However, letters should be sent to our congressman and senators, not a radio station. It would also be a good idea to do a little research first and think with your head rather than your heart before sending your correspondence.

Second positive thing, RA's response. It very nicely states that many distressful things are happening today and we must give thought as to how to move forward. After we give thought, we must act rather than just complain.

I am the insect in your ear and will crawl all over you! I have always lived my life by these words, long before they were ever written.

Just to be clear, I probably agree with half of RA's politics but as an American I live to "agree to disagree". This diversity is what makes us strong and makes the world an interesting place to live.

Thanks RA for helping wake people up and for the excellent show!!!!

Forever holding their feet to the fire,

    Lucifer
  • Idiots....
I'm a little shocked that anyone questioned Rise Against's intentions. If you know anything about the band or their music, you know that they are true Americans and really great guys. I am however, glad that we got this response and thankful to 97x for posting it.
    -May we continue to Rise-

Anyone with half a brain understood the message that Rise Against was trying to convey. Our country IS in a state of distress, and the message that was sent with the flag was a powerful one. It's unfortunate that people misinterpreted it as being disrespectful, but as mentioned... if you were there to see them perform "Hero Of War", you would understand that they respect our country a great deal, but just want to see an end to the violence of war.
