My job at NBT was to interview the bands, so my perspective of the day comes from that. I got to talk to everyone from Kill Hannah to My Chemical Romance. All the bands, interviewing them on-air and on the jumbotron. Here were some highlights from the interviews and some observations from the backstage madness:
Kill Hannah...great guys! Talking to them about music and the start of their success...I'm in the middle of asking about the new CD that came out over the summer and Jared Leto interrupts to share a story about how his lip got busted performing the night before! Crazy!
The interview with Tom Delonge. Here's a guy who had been with a band (Blink 182) that sold over 25 million albums worldwide. This guy NEVER has to think about money or fame again...and he confided in me (off-air) how this is all he ever wanted. The opportunity to chase down a dream...of playing the music he felt he HAD to deliver. While very respectful to Mark and Travis, he spoke about Angels and Airwaves like it was his destiny. Also, I should add, after the AVA set telling everyone backstage how NBT6 was AVA's best performance to date!
30 Seconds to Mars...these are some good dudes! We all know Jared, Shannon, Tomo and Matt and it's always good to see good people do well. They commented a year ago that the performance at NBT5 was one of their best. They commented after the shattering performance at NBT6 that was even better! 30STM did have an amazing set...and for another year, they were one of the top highlights!
My Chemical Romance...the next GREAT band! You saw their performance...you know that MCR are destined for something amazing. You've heard the CD like all of us at 97X and you know it's timeless. But to hear Gerard and crew backstage, it's like they're the baby band. They talk with other bands and really listen to what they have to say. While they are indeed performers, they are people, who love what they do.
The other thing to share from spending 95% of the day backstage was the camaraderie. Backstage at NBT6 was very special this year. ALL the bands, mingled, talked, shared touring stories and enjoyed the day. They all seemed so happy to be a part of the show. And in a world of non-stop touring, it's probably great, from their perspective, to have a day to relax, chat with old friends, make new ones, and play music in front of the best fans in the country...97X listeners!
Best...and thank you again from my most sincere place for supporting 97X.
