Day Five Friday, August 20, 2004 Our last day. Click for larger image | I get a call at 7:00a.m saying, "Wake up, we're going to a swimming event." It's Danimal with tickets he just got from our Coca-Cola people. Cool, we're off and we might get a chance to catch Michael Phelps in action, I'm up for it. We arrived back at Oaka (the Olympic complex) and it was hotter than hell today in Athens. The swimming starts off fast, a couple of quick women qualifying events and I'm thinking this is going to be cool. Then, reality hits; "Ladies and gentlemen," the foreign accented announcer rings out, "it's time for the 1500 meter qualifying heats!" So let me explain this, it's 30 laps back and forth in the pool and there is five heats. Each heat takes about 15 minutes to complete. And this isn't even for a medal! Dude, this sucks. The back of my neck is baking, I'm thirsty and some crazy Ukranian swimmer is doing his best to get into the medal round swimming damn near a mile! But, hey, I have respect for these athletes, so we stick it out, and I'm so glad we did. Shark with Michael Phelps Mom. | The final event was qualifying for the 4x100 medley. Countries competing for a shot at the medal round. Very cool to see America win their heat with the help of Michael Phelps. I noticed the woman sitting next to me cheering on the American team, but she was using the swimmers first names. "Go Neil! Go Michael!" She was either a really dedicated fan, or she knew the swimmers. As fate would have it, it was the latter of the two - I was sitting next to Michael Phelps mother! As the arena cleared out, I sat and talked with her for like ten minutes. What a cool woman. It was the hottest day in Athens so far, but it was also another day to add to an incredible journey. Tomorrow is our last day and then we fly out tomorrow evening. It's kinda sad to see the end coming.

Day Four Thursday, August 19, 2004 What an incredible day in Athens! Today, was history...literally! Before I tell you what historic event we witnessed, let me begin with where I was... Oaka | In Athens, the Olympic stadium is housed in a part of town called Oaka. Which, in the greek alphabet, stands for Athens Olympic Sports Complex. Crazy, but the Greeks are a little weird like that. Anyway, we're under the flame, and the grandeur of the stadium was our backdrop. Check out the pictures! And now we get to interview America's finest athletes, like Sara Hildebrand, who dives into water off of the 10m Springboard. Interpretation, she jumps from really high, and if she doesn't land right, she "smacks" into water. Imagine belly first from 30 feet in the sky...yeah, that would suck! The Walkway | Then, up walks Bela Karoli, the winningest Olympic coach in the history of women's gymnastics. This guy was a trip! Very passionate when he spoke...he waved his hands like crazy and even spit in my face a couple of times. How do you tell an Olympic legend, "you just spat in my face, dude." He was really cool and had some great insight on his career. Then, he ponied up a couple of tickets to the Woman's finals that night! Yes, we witnessed Carly Patterson get Gold in the All Arounds. That's huge! Not since Mary Lou Retton in 1984 have we won Gold in this event, and it was only the second time. It was history, and when they played the national anthem and raised the American flag, I got crazy chills. This day was intense, from meeting with the athletes, to watching history, I really felt like I was a part of something special. And, to do it in a city as amazing as Athens...I must be living right! |

Day Three Wednesday, August 18, 2004 Ouzo is not my friend. Official Mascot of the Athens Games. | The past 24 hours have been very, very eventful, to say the least. And, like all good stories, it starts with me saying, "So who wants to do a shot?!" The drink of choice in Greece is Ouzo, a clear, black licorice tasting shot. It's not the best shot in the world, but when in Athens, have an Ouzo. Fast forward a half hour and three Ouzos later, I'm now becoming very foggy. Ouzo's a pesky shot - honestly I never really felt that drunk...really. We drank at the bar until 4:00 in the morning with other radio D.J.'s and VIP's from Austria and Italy. Now that you know how it all started, like many nights of drinking, the next day can be very painful. Wednesday morning at 11:30, I awoke to a pounding headache, but I figured a couple of bottles of water, Tylenol and a hot shower would cure it. And for the most part, it did. Then, Danimal and I crawled into a hot cab at 1:00p.m. to take the 45 minute ride to the Acropolis. Oooh, things got really bad here. I'm not sure whether it was the heat, the cab driver smoking or just the lingering, disgusting aura of Ouzo, but going 120 kilometers an hour down a very busy highway, I decided that everything in my gut was about to come out! Instead of asking the cabbie to stop or alerting Danimal, I just opened the door and released the hounds onto the streets of Athens! Shark at the Parthenon | "You o.k.?" The hairy greek cabbie was a little alarmed and decided it was best to pull over. I must admit, he was very accommodating, seeing how I was now violently vomiting down the side of his Mercedes (yes, Mercedes) taxi cab. According to Danimal, I heaved six solid times, in and out of the car, on myself and into the parking lot of a gas station. I should've alerted Danimal in advance, not so he could help me, but so he could've taken out his camera and captured these very special moments. We finally made it to the Acropolis and Athens shining monument, The Parthenon. When I made my full recovery, we found a McDonalds. I swear that was the best McRoyale with cheese I've ever tasted! It was still an amazing day, and no I did not pull another "olsen", however, yakking at the Acropolis would've been really cool. Shark P.S. - no Ouzo tonight!

Day Two Tuesday, August 17, 2004 Wow...Yao Ming is tall. I never realized how tall Yao Ming was until we snuck into our killer seats at the basketball arena. We were actually given nosebleed seats, but we decided to take it upon ourselves to move WAY down. I got a little freaked when security walked over - I was sure they we're going to ask us to move, but instead they asked me to remove my feet from the chair-back in front of me. Nice! We've finished our first broadcast day, and now it's time to drink! Danimal and I are going back to our hotel to sit at a bar overlooking Athens and imbibe on a couple of Heinekens. Hey, you can't drink Coke ALL the time! Tomorrow, we venture back to the Acropolis with more pictures from inside. Be safe, and go U.S.A.!

Day One The trip here. I knew when I woke up Sunday morning that a treacherously long day laid ahead. Filled with trips to various airports, I would really understand the definition of jetlag. We left Tampa at 11:30a.m., flew through Boston and arrived in London at 6:00a.m. our time. Fortunately, Coca-Cola gave us First Class on the trip into London, which was killer! My airplane seat reclined into a bed! Oh, those poor people in coach. We finally got into Athens at 3:00p.m. local time. I was so tired I could barely complete sentences, but the goal I had was to stay awake until I had to go to bed later that night. I'm told that's how you beat jetlag. Danimal, our promotions guru who's traveling with me, thought we should go to the Acropolis and watch the sunset. We're gay like that. Dude, it was so beautiful and breathtaking. The Acropolis sits on a mountain overlooking the city of Athens and houses some of the world's oldest monuments. The Parthenon, the charm in it's ruins, dates back to 700 B.C. I was humbled to be next to architecture that's 2500 years older than the country we call home. Plus, looking out over Athens while the sun was setting is hard to sum up in words. Check out the pictures...you must. We're here, and there are many adventures to come.
