A BREWER'S DIARYDid Arthur Guinness keep a diary? There are no surviving records, so perhaps he was too busy perfecting GUINNESS® beer to write a detailed journal. But just dream... Explore the life and work of Arthur Guinness – visionary, father, founder. Get a personal flavour of the man and his passion. We know little of Arthur's childhood and upbringing. Born in 1725 near Celbridge in County Kildare, Ireland, he was the son of Richard Guinness, land steward to the Archbishop of Cashel. Beer was in the blood: Richard was said to brew for the bishop's estate workers. Arthur had a lucky start -- the bishiop became his Godfather and bequeathed him £100 in his will. Arthur put the money to good use and four years later, at the age of 31, was brewing under his own steam in Leixlip, just 17km from Dublin. Then, Arthur's momentous decision: to head for the city and set-up in business on his own. In 1759, he left his younger brother in charge of the Leixlip brewery. The rest is brewing history.
