The 10th Anniversary 97X Next Big Thing was celebrated on December 5th, 2010 at the 1-800-Ask-Gary Amphitheatre. The show was headlined by 2-time NBT alumni, My Chemical Romance who had only two weeks prior released their album “Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.” The band went out of their way to perform, having a show in NYC on Friday night, then playing NBT on Sunday only to return to NYC on Monday morning to record their New Year’s Rockin’ Eve performance for NBC. The lineup was stacked with bands making their NBT debuts including; The Black Keys, The Dirty Heads, A Day To Remember and Neon Trees. Against Me! headlined the second stage which also featured Neon Trees, American Bang and an unforgettable performance from A Day To Remember. NBT 10 was the first year that featured additional “pop-up” acoustic performances from select bands around the venue. Sick Puppies performed Cee-Lo’s “F&#k You” near the second stage, Switchfoot performed in what is now the Pepsi Deck inside the venue, American Bang performed from a pup-up stage on the lawn and Paper Tongues performed backstage for a crowd of winners which was broadcasted live to the jumbotron for the entire crowd to watch. Switchfoot lead singer Jon Foreman spent a majority of the band’s set in the crowd, singing with the fans. The Dirty Heads surprised the crowd when Rome joined them onstage and performed their hit “Lay Me Down.” The Black Keys played their first ever show in Tampa at the 97X Next Big Thing. My Chemical Romance closed the show with an hour and half set that started with “Na Na Na” and ended with an encore that included a solo performance of “Cancer” by only Gerard and the entire band returned to close the show with “The Kids From Yesterday.” |
