97X Next Big Thing 16 was the first Next Big Thing since 2008, featuring an entire lineup of bands who had never performed at the event previously. Additionally, it was the last year that the show was a one-day event, happening on December 3rd, 2016 at the Midflorida Credit Union Amphitheatre. The day kicked off on the second stage with performances from 888, Weathers and Lewis Del Mar before Coin hit the main stage and delighted the crowd with their hit “Talk Too Much.” Judah and the Lion who, at the time were enjoying their first hit single “Take It All Back” blew the crowd away with a headlining set on the second stage which included a Killers Cover and a few minutes of T-Pain’s “Booty Wurk.” The music shifted entirely to the main stage with New Zealand’s The Naked & Famous making their Florida and Tampa debut at 3pm. Throughout the afternoon, Coin, Lewis Del Mar and Judah & The Lion performed additional acoustic sets between bands. Bishop Briggs made her Florida and Tampa Bay debut and wow’d the crowd with blistering performances of her hits “Wild Horses” and “River.” Grammy Award nominees, Capital Cities hit the stage as the sun was setting and the five brothers that make up the band Kongo’s followed them with a performance that included their hit “Come With Me Now.” The evening’s sets also included Phantogram and The Head & The Heart. The 1975 hit the stage at 9:45 and their unforgettable 75 minute set included songs from their two albums including “Chocolate”, “Sex”, “Love Me”, “Somebody Else” and “The Sound.” With their 2016 performance, The 1975 became the first English band to ever headline an NBT. |
