The 97X Next Big Thing 7 was on Sunday, December 2, 2007 at the Ford Amphitheater in Tampa. The capacity crowd got to the venue early to see Mutemath perform for the first time ever in Tampa Bay. The Starting Line followed and emo favorites, Saosin headlined the 2nd stage. The main stage kicked off at 12:30 with The Almost with Clearwater’s own Aaron Gillespie (from Underoath) on lead vocals. Their set included their hit “Say This Sooner.” This show was also Silversun Pickups’ first ever show in Tampa and their set included their hits “Lazy Eye” and “Well Thought Out Twinkles.” During one song, lead singer, Brian Aubert jumped off stage and walked throughout the venue and lawn throughout the song before returning to the stage. Next up on the main stage was Gainsville’s own Against Me! Their 45 minute set was heavy with songs from their new album New Wave which was release several months before, including “New Wave”, “Up The Cuts” and “Thrash Unreal.” They also performed the track “Borne on the FM Waves of the Heart” with 97X’s afternoon personality, Kate singing the Teagan Quin part of the song. When the show was announced, the next performance on the bill was supposed to be Blue October performing a Miller Lite Green Room Acoustic set, but unfortunately, like the year before in 2006, Blue October cancelled the show five days before. With limited time to find a replacement band, the station instead just increased the set times for the rest bands on the main stage. Flyleaf hit the stage at 3:20 with a set that included “I’m So Sick”, “Fully Alive” and “All Around Me.” As of 2020, this would be Flyleaf’s only NBT appearance. The entire band of Coheed and Cambria finally played NBT after Claudio’s solo acoustic performance only 3 years previously. Their set included tracks from the band’s first four albums including “A Favor House Atlantic”, “Blood Red Summer”, “Welcome Home” and more. Paramore hit the NBT stage for the first time and would return 10 years later to headline the show in 2017. Their set included “Misery Business” and “Pressure” and they were joined onstage by The Starting Line’s lead Singer Kenny Vasoli for their track “That’s What You Get.” Chevelle would make their first NBT appearance, hitting the stage around 6pm. They would return to NBT in 2009 and 2010. Tom Delong and Angels & Airwaves were up next on the NBT stage, playing the show for the second year in a row. Up next was Rise Against with their 2nd NBT performance. They would return to the NBT stage to headline the show in 2009 and 2012. Jimmy Eat World, playing their first NBT since 2001 breezed through a set of favorites including “The Middle”, “Bleed American”, “Work”, “Big Casino”, “Sweetness” and “A Praise Chorus.” In a trainwreck of a segue, Jimmy Eat World was followed by the headliners, The Used. Bert and the boys triumphantly returned to the NBT stage after performing in 2002 and 2004. Their set included new music from the album Lies for the Liars which was release earlier in the year. The setlist included “Pretty Handsome Awkward”, “The Bird in the Worm”, “Take It Away”, “All That I’ve Got”, “Taste of Ink” and “Buried Myself Alive.” Unlike 2002 and 2004, Bert didn’t have any issues with the police at NBT, but he and the guys from the band did cause some problems when they decided to have a fire extinguisher fight backstage! |
