A Virginia college student got off to a good start in 2023, winning $100,000 in Virginia Lottery’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle.
Hunter Johnson, of Gloucester, was one of seven people who won the secondary six-figure prize in the annual raffle, which is held on New Year’s Day.
According to a news release from the Virginia Lottery, Johnson, who was playing the raffle for the first time, said she had heard about the drawing from some friends.
After buying some of the $20 tickets at a 7-Eleven in Gloucester, Johnson said she was surprised when she had one of the winning tickets.
“We were screaming and jumping in the air!” Johnson said in a statement. “It feels unreal!”
Johnson is studying business management.
Virginia Lottery officials said that five tickets were drawn for the $1 million top prize. Those tickets were bought in Burke, Danville, Henrico, Midlothian and Woodbridge.
In addition to Johnson, $100,000 tickets were bought in Blacksburg, Chantilly, Chesapeake, Fredericksburg, Midlothian and Woodstock.
