DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — A man wanted for the murder of his ex-girlfriend was found dead in a creek in Villa Rica, Georgia, officials said.
According to WSB-TV, Douglas County Sheriff Tim Pounds said in a news conference Monday that Harold Dakers, 34, allegedly murdered his ex-girlfriend, Kaleshia Lyons, 29, on Friday. When Lyons was murdered, Dakers was reportedly out on bond on charges that were related to her in a nearby county, but no specifics on those charges were shared.
Lyons moved from Carrollton, Georgia, to her grandmother’s house in Lithia Springs, Georgia, after the incident with Dakers, according to WSB-TV. Lithia Springs was where she was killed.
At the time of the murder, Lyons was home alone, Pounds said, according to WSB-TV. Her cause of death was blunt force trauma to her head and her face.
According to a news release from the Villa Rica Police Department, officers were called Tuesday about seeing Dakers going into the woods near Villa Trace and North Lassiter Street. When officers entered the woods to search for Dakers, they found him next to a creek.
Dakers then allegedly then pulled out a handgun and began running through the creek, according to DCSO. Officers lost sight of him and then heard a gunshot. Officers followed the sound and found Dakers with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. VRPD said Dakers died from his injuries.
“We are sad that this search ended this way but grateful that no one else was injured,” VRPD said.
