The man, from Greenville, bought a quick pick ticket at the GT Express Mart for the Jan. 16 drawing, South Carolina Education Lottery officials said in a news release on Friday.

The winner, who requested anonymity, missed the grand prize by one number, lottery officials said. He chose four white numbers and the Powerball number of 3.

Paying an extra dollar for the PowerPlay option tripled his $50,000 earnings to $150,000.

The man decided to donate his winnings to an Upstate charity, lottery officials said.

“I hit enough to make someone happy,” he said in a statement.

The odds of winning $50,000 by matching four white ball numbers and the red Powerball are 1 in 913,129, lottery officials said.

For selling the claimed ticket, GT Express Mart received a $1,500 commission.
